What is Mentoring?

For a new broker joining the industry, both the MFAA and the FBAA require that you be mentored by an accredited mentor. This is one of the most important stages of your career, and getting the right support from day one can make all the difference to how your business starts.

The MFAA typically requires 12 settlements and for defined competency criteria to be met. The FBAA requires a 2-year mentorship period. At Broker Sidekick, we don’t impose a minimum mentorship period. As soon as you meet the requirements, we sign you off, and for most of our mentees, that’s been somewhere around 9 to 12 months.

Your mentor reviews your applications before they’re submitted to a lender, working alongside you in a way that’s similar to an apprenticeship — training, teaching, and guiding you until you’re confident and ready to operate independently. 

From finding the right lender for a deal, to structuring the application and navigating the process, this is where the foundations of your business are built. Getting this stage right sets the tone for everything that follows.

Fabien is an award-winning mentor, an active broker, and the founder of The Lending Lab. He is accredited by both the MFAA and FBAA, and brings over 14 years of hands-on industry experience to every mentoring relationship.

What sets Fabien apart is his hands-on approach — not just helping you place deals, but explaining the why behind every decision. His mentoring covers the full application journey: from a client’s initial enquiry, to researching lenders and selecting the right product, all the way through to structuring, submitting, and processing the deal.
